Home Care – Norwell, MA
Norwell is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States.
Norwell's history dates back to 1634, when it was initially settled as part of the Satuit settlement, which later became Scituate. This area included what we now know as both Scituate and Norwell. In 1849, Norwell was officially established and initially known as South Scituate. The town got its current name in 1888 through a ballot vote honoring Henry Norwell, a dry goods merchant who donated money to maintain its roads. The first settlers were drawn to the area for its agricultural potential, but the city later grew a robust shipbuilding industry along the North and Northwest rivers. Shipbuilding was a major industry from the 18th to the early 19th centuries, producing some of the finest frigates, schooners, whalers, and merchant vessels. The Norwell Village Area Historic District, in the heart of the town, preserves this rich history.
Nowadays, Norwell is a wealthy residential community with a population exceeding 10,000. It features modern amenities, including schools, shopping centers, churches, libraries, healthcare facilities, a wildlife preserve, various other support services, and three industrial parks. According to data from the United States Census Bureau, the town covers an area of 21.2 square miles (55 km²), with 20.9 square miles (54 km²) being land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km²), or 1.37%, being water. Wetlands comprise about 30% to 38% of the town's area. Located on Massachusetts' South Shore, Norwell borders Hanover and Rockland to the west, Pembroke to the south, Marshfield and Scituate to the east and northeast, and Hingham to the north. The town is roughly 14 miles (23 km) east of Brockton, 17 miles (27 km) north of Plymouth, and 20 miles (32 km) south of Boston.
Much of Norwell’s eastern border is along the North River, a historical hub for shipbuilding companies. The town also has numerous brooks and ponds, including Third Herring Brook, which makes up a significant portion of the border with Hanover, Accord Pond at the intersection of Norwell, Rockland, and Hingham, and Jacobs Pond along Route 123. The northern part of the town features hilly terrain, while the southern tip of Wompatuck State Park extends into Norwell.
