Initially settled in 1641 as part of Dedham and known as 'West Dedham,' it became its town in 1897, marking the final separation from the original Dedham village. The early settlers of the Clapboard Trees Precinct in Dedham were affluent and cultured, connected with influential political figures and inclined towards the religious liberalism popular in Boston then. Discontent with the dominant Calvinist views in Dedham, they sought independence. Initially, the town was to be named "Nahatan." In July 2005, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Westwood, MA, 13th on its list of the 100 Best Places to Live in the United States.
