Home Care – Abington, MA
Abington is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Boston. According to the 2020 census, its population is 17,062.
Before European settlement, the local Native American tribes called the area Manamooskeagin, which translates to "great green place of shaking grass." Two local streams were named to recognize the abundant beaver population: Schumacastacut, meaning "upper beaver brook," and Schumacastuscacant, meaning "lower beaver brook."
European settlers first arrived in Abington in 1668. The initial land area included what are now the towns of Bridgewater, Rockland, Whitman, and Hanover. The city was officially incorporated in 1712, having been named six years earlier by Governor Joseph Dudley in honor of Anne Venables-Bertie, Countess of Abingdon, whose husband, the second Earl of Abingdon, helped Dudley secure his governorship from Queen Anne. Abingdon originates from Abingdon-on-Thames in Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire), UK. Although Governor Dudley's original petition requested the name "Abingdon," a marginal note on the document changed the spelling to "Abington," which has remained ever since.
